The Province of Canada was the union of Upper and Lower Canada  (today, Ontario and Québec) from 1841 until Confederation in 1867. It initially guaranteed equal representation, although the French-Canadian population (670,000) was larger than that of the English (480,000). The Province of Canada was divided into Canada East (the former Lower Canada) and Canada West (the former Upper Canada).
